How to be Successful with Affiliate Marketing?

Sharing is caring!

Maybe you’ve tried affiliate marketing, but you weren’t successful, and now you are looking for answers. I hope this article will be able to provide you with the answers.

To be successful with affiliate marketing, you first need to know how to find people who may be interested in what you promote (traffic). Then, you need to get people excited about the product you promote through a process (affiliate bridge). And finally, the product you promote must be what your audiences want and need (profitable product).

In this article, I will go over, and above sharing with you the affiliate success formula, as well as an important concept, called the “stages of awareness”.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is simply a strategy for companies to promote their products without having to pay for advertising.

Instead, the companies will pay a defined amount to people, like you and me, whenever we can bring leads or sales to their business.

Explanation for what is affiliate marketing

Referring to the above image:

  1. Company A wants to promote its product through affiliate marketing, so it created an affiliate program that pays its affiliates 30% commission whenever a sale is made.
  2. People like you and I can join the company as an affiliate.
  3. Once we are approved as an affiliate, the company will provide us with a unique affiliate link. We need to use this affiliate link to promote the products of the company so that any sales or leads generated through this link will be tagged to us.
  4. We will go out there and share our affiliate link to the world, and how we do that is through mediums like a blog and social media channels like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, or whatever. All these are called traffic methods.
  5. There are people using these social media channels, and they are your potential prospects (Traffic).
  6. Someone clicks on your affiliate link.
  7. Your affiliate link sends that person to the company’s website, and that person made a purchase worth of $100.
  8. You made a $30 commission for making that sale happen.

The Affiliate Marketing Success Formula

Affiliate Marketing Success Formula

There are 3 elements of the affiliate success formula:

Targeted Traffic + Affiliate Bridge + Profitable Product = Success

Traffic

Every person online is considered a “traffic”, but we do not just want traffic, we want traffic that has the potential of buying products through our affiliate link.

There are basically 3 types of traffic:

  1. Cold
  2. Warm
  3. Hot

Whoever that comes in contact with your content or anything that you produce online will have different intentions.

Most of the time, people consume content when there is a need. The need could be to solve a problem, or it could be for entertainment.

And, as affiliate marketers, we need to understand the temperature of our traffic to provide the content that they desire.

Cold Traffic – These are people who have not seen you before, they don’t know what you are about, and there is a trust barrier.

To promote your product to this group of people, you need to build trust and rapport with them and warm them up.

You can do that by providing the best answer to the query that your traffic is searching for on search engines (free/organic traffic). Or, you can advertise on social media channels by targeting interest groups (paid traffic).

We’ll talk more about the differences between free traffic and paid traffic below.

Warm Traffic – These are people who have come across your content, they like the value that you are providing, and they are interested in what you can offer to them. This type of traffic is the best traffic for affiliate marketers because you would have already built trust and rapport with your audience.

Hot Traffic – Unless you are a product owner, this may not apply to you. However, as affiliate marketers, we can build a loyal following of people who will buy anything that you recommend. There are many methods for affiliate marketers to grow a loyal following, for example, creating a private Facebook group that is hyperactive with lots of value as well as user-generated content.

Free Traffic vs. Paid Traffic

Let’s talk about paid traffic first.

Paid Traffic – You will pay money to buy ads; it doesn’t take as much effort to create an ad or to run an ad campaign.

But you need a lot of knowledge and skill, like copywriting, motivation, and persuasion.

You need to understand what makes people click on an ad, what makes people want to pursue further through your ad, and how you get people to buy something at the end.

If you are a beginner, it is tough for you to acquire this kind of skill, it requires a lot of practice.

Every guru will tell you that you shouldn’t scale an ad if it is not a winning ad.

A winning ad means a dollar in ad spend that converts into more than a dollar in revenue.

But, for beginners, as you are acquiring the skill, you’d take probably 20 to 50 tries or even more, before you find one successful ad.

This means that you are probably going to spend another $200, $500, $1,000, or even more on buying traffic to find that winning ad, that’s on top of the money that you’ve paid for the course.

Many people go into this expecting to earn quick money. They go in there, create one ad, they run it, and expect things to happen.

But after they tried 2 to 3 times, and spent quite a sum of money, they found themselves losing money. Then, as they progress without results, they didn’t think that finding a successful ad is possible, and they quit.

Why do I know this?

Because I’ve tried it myself, and it is not that easy.

You can earn money really quickly if you found a successful ad, but for you to find one, it requires a lot of knowledge and skill from you, as well as a lot of money to spend on ads.

In general, if you intend to go into paid advertising, I would recommend that you join a training program that comes with personal coaching.

Because, you’ll learn a lot more and a lot quicker if you have someone more experienced and successful coaching you.

If you decide to go towards the path of paid advertising, I recommend check out this program.

Free Traffic – It is suitable for someone who wants to earn money online without spending a lot of money upfront.

But, here’s the reality.

Nothing is easy, especially acquiring free traffic. And. free traffic doesn’t really mean it’s free. There is always a trade-off.

With Free traffic, you gotta spend a lot of time and effort on research, content creation, and lots of other stuff, and you have to do it consistently.

And, unlike paid traffic where your income can take off relatively quickly if you found one successful ad, free traffic will take months before you see a little results, and it could take a year or more to earn a substantial amount of money from affiliate marketing.

However, it is still very lucrative, and it is a good way to build passive income for years to come.

So, if you choose to start with free traffic, the best program I have come across is this. It is free to get started as well.

Affiliate Bridge

Once you got the traffic, you gotta send them to an affiliate bridge.

An affiliate bridge could be a way for you to get the contact information (like first name and email address), or you could send your traffic straight to a video or blog post where you will convey a message that you:

  1. Understand the needs, wants, problems, and desires of your target audience;
  2. Build rapport and trust, either to you as the affiliate marketer or towards the product that you are promoting.
  3. And finally, demonstrate that the product you are promoting can solve the problem of your target audience.

If you can hit all these pointers, you will have a very profitable affiliate bridge.

Example – Refer to the image above.

  1. The article is about “best guitar to buy for beginners”. In that article, you deliver the information your traffic (person) is looking for, but you can go further to figure out the guitar journey of that individual.
  2. Maybe that person is a beginner who wants to learn how to play guitar. Then in that article, you can pique the interest of that person by offering a simple chord progression training that will help that person play like a professional in minutes.
  3. Before he or she can get that training, you ask for an email address.
  4. Once he or she put in the contact information, you can send that person to a video where you teach the chord progression, you introduce yourself, share with him or her your journey to playing professional guitar. You deliver what you promise to that person.
  5. You recommend that person to check out a guitar training course. If that person joins the training course, great, you made a sale, but if that person doesn’t check out that training course right at that moment, that is fine because you have the contact information.
  6. A day later, you send a useful email to that person and teach a second set of chord progression.
  7. A few days later, you send another email that provides more value. If that person consumes your content, more likely, he or she would have already established some trust in you or whatever you promote. Then again, you ask that person to check out the training course again.

I hope this is making sense to you.

Profitable Product

There are a few things to look at to identify a profitable product.

  1. Commission rate of the affiliate product or program.
  2. Value Ladder of products.

Commission Rate – Assuming your goal as an affiliate marketer is $3,000 per month. If you are selling a product for $100, but you are only getting $2 for each sale (2%), then you need to sell 1,500 items per month to get to $3,000.

However, if you sell a $100 worth of product and you are getting $50 out of it (50%), you only need to sell 60 items per month to get to $3,000.

Simply speaking, the higher the commission rate, the quicker you will reach your goal.

Value Ladder – A company may have multiple products that serve needs for its customer at different stages of its journey.

How it normally works is that a company will have a free offer or freebie for its affiliates to share with their audience.

When the audience finds value in the freebie, they may want to learn more about what the company can offer. In that case, the company will have another product that most maybe a couple of dollars.

And, as the company provides even more value, and the audience is really liking what the company offers, they may want to start spending a couple of hundreds or thousands to buy the higher level of products from the company.

Example – You got a free voucher to a dentist to clean your teeth, the next thing you know, after the Dentist worked on your teeth for a few minutes, she will ask if you are a smoker and that your teeth are yellow.

No one likes yellow teeth, so the dentist says no problem, I will get this fixed if you want to. Then you consented, and she starts with teeth whitening.

The dentist doesn’t stop there. After a while, the dentist suggests that you need a retainer because your teeth are shifting.

Before you know it, you’ve spent $50 on teeth whitening and hundreds of dollars on the retainer. This is what we called the value ladder.

The Dentist assesses your needs and then suggests a higher valued product to you. And in this case, the teeth whitening and the retainer.

The better the company can identify its value ladder of products, the better for its affiliates. Because, you can promote a low ticket product upfront for a company, and you continue to get paid whenever the consumer buys a higher ticket product.

That’s how you earn a lot of money with affiliate marketing.

Stages of Consumer Awareness

The stages of consumer awareness is a very important concept to understand if you want to be successful in selling anything online.

Everyone who ever considered buying something online will go through these stages.

It ties very closely to the affiliate success formula above.

Let me share what those stages of consumer awareness are, and then I will wrap it up by combining all the concepts talked about in this article into one big picture.

Now, there are 5 stages in the consumer awareness.

Stages of Consumer Awareness

Unaware Stage – This stage is where a person who doesn’t know that they have a problem. Like for example, a teenager who has an oily scalp that might lead to hair loss, but right now, he has his hair intact. Or, when a person is young and healthy, and they don’t feel the need to buy insurance. This stage is where the problem of that person is not apparent yet.

Problem Stage – This stage is where a person acknowledges that they have a problem. It is up to the individual to decide if they want to progress into the next stage of awareness to solve their problem, or they want to just leave their problem hanging.

Solution Stage – This stage is where a person has buying intentions. They become a consumer. The consumer won’t necessarily spend a couple of hundreds or thousands on a product upfront, but is willing to spend small amounts of money to try products.

Product Stage – This stage is where the consumer found a suitable product or service through the samples he or she has tried in the Solution Stage, and is willing to spend a lot of money on that product or service. For example, it could be a $30 spa treatment in stage 3, but because the consumer likes the therapy so much, that he or she purchased a year-long package that cost a couple of thousands.

Transformation Stage – This is the stage where consumers become advocates of a company’s product or solution because of the transformational experience they had. For example, if the consumer was plump who now turns muscular, or if the consumer was bald but now has baby hair. The consumer is highly likely to share their experiences with other people who faces the same problem they once had.

These are the 5 stages of consumer awareness. We as affiliate marketers need to influence the consumer to move from one stage to the other, however, not all stages are applicable.

It would be a waste of time and money to convince someone in the Unaware Stage that they have a problem. And, the Product and Transformation Stages are more applicable to product owners because they can control the consumer experience with their product or service.

So, we need to shift our focus to the Problem and Solution Stages as affiliate marketers. We need to identify where our audiences are in terms of the stages of awareness and provide relevant content to them.

If our audience is in the Problem Stage, we want to help them solve their problem by providing useful information and recommending relevant and useful products to them.

And, if our audience is in the Solution Stage, we want to provide more information about the product that we recommend, and help them decide on the best product to buy to solve their problem.

I hope this is making sense. Feel free to leave a comment below this article if you have any questions.

Wrapping this up

How to be successful with affiliate marketing

There are 3 elements in the affiliate success formula. Traffic, Affiliate Bridge and Profitable Product. And, the formula ties very closely to the stages of awareness.

The beginning stages of any affiliate business is always traffic from search engines or social media channels. Initial sources of traffic could be in Stages 1, 2, or 3, depending on the content the audience is consuming.

If a traffic (person) was to consume a content that is pure entertainment, then they are most likely in the Unaware Stage. But if a person is searching for problem based keywords on Google or YouTube, then they are in the Problem Stage.

And if a person is looking for solution based keywords, like a product review or a best of kind of content, then they are in the Solution Stage.

So, wherever your audience is in terms of the Stages of Awareness, you need to lead them through to an affiliate bridge. Because through an affiliate bridge, you can lead consumers in Stage 2 into Stage 4 progressively (see Affiliate Bridge above). And, Affiliate Bridge is the best way to build trust and rapport with the consumers.

By selecting an affiliate program that has a good commission payout rate, and a value ladder (see Profitable Product above), you can promote the low-ticket affiliate product to people in Stage 3.

The company will take care of the consumers you sent them, and lead them into Stage 4.

Any good affiliate program will pay you commissions whenever a consumer buys any products on top of the one that you initially recommended. For example, if a company has products in the range of $1, $7, $28, $148, $1,000, you could lead your audience to buy the $1 product, and if your audience bought the $1,000 product in the end, without any further effort from you, you will still be compensated.

That’s how you can be successful as an affiliate marketer. Every element of the Affiliate Success Formula must work together to achieve great results.

That’s all I have for you, and thank you for taking the time to read this article. I hope that I have provided you with a good answer to how to be successful with affiliate marketing.

Hi there! I'm Jack from Singapore, and I started my journey to find passive income when I was 24 years old. Back then, I worked as a Share Registration Officer while pursuing a degree in Economics and Finance. I was earning peanuts and I quickly realised what I was pursuing was not what I wanted to do with my life. So, I set out to find ways to make money online. The road was tough, there were many setbacks, but I'm glad I found success. While pursuing for success, I use this website as well as a YouTube channel to share what I learn along the way and hopefully make some friends here. Let's join hands and make passive income together! More about me and my success story here.

  3. Hello there, thanks for giving this very wonderful information about affiliate marketing and i must admit there is so much to it beyond what anyone who isn’t into it thinks. Affiliate marketing is a very nice business and with the right steps one is bound to make some really nice money from it. Some things needs to be put into consideration and first the right Search Engine and good site contents will help.

  4. This article was brilliantly written as it broke down simply what is affiliate marketing. I am new to this field and there are a lot of things I didn’t know for example you spoke about cold traffic and warm traffic etc. Made me realise there is a lot more than just simply finding a product and promoting it. Thank you so much for it. Are there any other free traffic sites you can recommend for beginners like myself? Thanks

    1. Hi Jaye,

Thank you for stopping by, and I am glad that this article is helpful to you!

Honestly, I have never come across any legitimate free traffic sources other than the sources that you created yourself, like a blog, your YouTube channel, Facebook page, or whatever social media platforms. But, if you ask me which is the best social platform to grow your affiliate business right now in April 2020, then I would say it is going to be TikTok because this platform is not as crowded as others at this moment.

Anyway, thanks so much for stopping by Jaye! Wishing you success in your affiliate marketing journey.

      Your friend,

      Jack

  5. Hello Jack

Great article. You pour out a lot of energy from created videos! And you are very right saying” turn any passion into a blog that generates a full-time passive income”; just want to add: discipline is no 1  if you’re want to earn full – time passive income.

Your post inspires me again to work hard for passive income.

I will check ” The ABCs of earning a passive income online.” you-tube tonight.

  6. Thanks Jack, for this post on being successful at affiliate marketing. The part that got my attention was  building traffic and the Affiliate Bridge. The 3 steps in building a bridge between our niche and our customers are very easy to understand and implement. The guitar learning example is perfect I will use this method in my business.

  7. I found your article useful and informative.  AND is was very clear, I thank you for that because I am just starting out with my business and some things are not clear.  What I liked most was your explanation of the Affiliate bridge, starting with an email/something free and drawing them in.  I have starting thinking of an email campaign now.  Also, your explanation of the Value ladder product, a company with many products.  I’ve just made some connections now, with the affiliate programs I have read about and their benefit to me.  I’ve subscribed to your YouTube channel, again appreciate your knowledge and clear explanation.

  8. Hello Jack

I’ve been in affiliate marketing for a while and while I fully understand the difference between free and paid traffic, I had no concept of the idea of cold, warm and hot traffic so your explanation of these was a real eye opener and very valuable for me.

You’re absolutely correct in what you say about ‘free’ traffic having a potentially huge trade off in terms of time spent on research, content creation, etc, but with the right training, patience and persistence I feel it’s worth it to hone the skills you’re developing along the way as well. Is that where the free program your article links to comes in?

I think a lot of that depends on circumstances. People forget that affiliate marketing is still a business and needs to be approached as such. Therefore, they need to be prepared to invest financially in their business in terms of an advertising  budget. I can certainly see the value of knowing how to create an ad that will turn visitors to your site into buyers. There are probably few people ‘sharper’ than Dave Sharpe for that so his course certainly looks worth investigating. Good to see him back after the Empower episode and not parading himself around as he Messiah like the ‘other’ Dave!

Good quality training in content creation, SEO, keyword research, etc, will generate an income from free traffic in time but people should always be prepared to invest some of this back into their business in the form of advertising. At then end of the day, if every Buck invested into an ad budget returns even just $1.50 then it’s worth the effort but in time the ratio will be much higher.

What’s your take on that – do you a mix of both free and paid traffic generation and what do you find gives you the best results?

Thanks for such a valuable article and may you enjoy much deserved success.

  9. This is an insightfil article on affiliate marketing. Any business whether online or offline requires effective time tested marketing and promotional strategies. Traffic is currently a critical element of these strategies, but just one of many. I really like your “stages of awareness” because it not only make sense but it is a very effective way to approach business. You have broken things down well in every area you described. I especially like how you have described the difference between cold, warm, and hot traffic. The five (5) stages of awareness makes it easy to understand and ideally implement successfully. Social media and search engines are a great way to generate traffic, but it does take time. That’s why I prefer a combination approach of both paid and free. Thanks for your tremendous insights into the ins and outs of affiliate marketing.

  10. Deciding to build an online income is often done without much forethought because of lack of information.  Your explanation fully covers the benefits of a place to build a business from the ground up.

Cutting through the hype from listening to sales pitches that promise unreal results is important.  Having a place to read about what can be expected when starting in a supportive community with the actual education added to the training is a strong part of what caught my eye in your article.  Anyone reading your article would be able to see the benefits of growing a business as described by your explanation.

    Thanks for the information.

  11. Thank you for your post. It is useful for me. I started online business for a while now. The outcome is not satisfactory. I always want to take time and research on traffic to my websites, since the traffic is life blood of online business, but I never do so.

Here comes your article, which contains a lot of useful information on traffic, cold, warm, and hot. I don’t know these terms before I read your article. You are absolutely right that it is important to work hard to move cold traffic to warm then hot. With this, you will have unlimited resources to promote any of your products and service.

It is kind of you sharing this useful information.

  12. Hi Jack, you have provided a good read, by providing this valuable lesson on how to be successful with Affiliate Marketing.

There is no doubt these days, how online business has become the business model of the 21st century, to the point of competing favorably with the traditional business model. And among the various platforms of the online business, is Affiliate Marketing. It has become one of the most popular and fastest ways of making an online income. It has a training process that must have to be followed. And in your article, you took the time to explain the process.

    Training As Prerequisite

From your discussion, I gained that an affiliate beginner has to get some training on how to become a successful affiliate. And that will include having an authority website, using keywords to create rich content based on the needs of the audience. I understand this to be key to becoming a successful affiliate marketer. That means that the person will learn how to build a site that is SEO ranked by google and other search engines like Yahoo and the rest; which will then gradually, lead your business to start having wide exposure and recognition and trust from your audience.

In other words, you’re letting the newbies understand the importance of building a solid sustainable business foundation, before thinking about the commissions.

5 Stages of  Consumer awareness, I think that it is good that you included this in your content. Because a lot of people enter online business with little or no knowledge at all of how things work on the online sphere. You have provided a kind of affiliate marketing for dummies that is very necessary for your readers to digest, by breaking some of the steps and concepts of affiliate marketing down for easy understanding for beginners.

Often time some people can be turned off when they come across a word that they are not familiar with. An example is a term – ‘affiliate’, they will understand the market term but affiliate what is it about? If nobody is there to explain it to their understanding, they will not know. And I think, this is what your article was trying to do here.

Quite interesting too, is your effort to educate your readers or audience, on the psychological aspects of marketing, which comprises of

    1) The ability to find the right people who have an interest in becoming affiliate marketers, and then train the person with the knowledge of how to present whatever product or service in an honest and convincing way to the public.

    2) Making sure that what you want to promote or promoting is solving a need, it is adding value to people’s lives, meaning that you have to be selective of the products you sign up to promote regardless of the brand.

    3) The ability to offer some free training and bonuses is equally a good catch to draw customers to your site, everybody likes free stuff, after all, what do they have to lose?. And the need for paid ads for leads generating is highlighted too. But it seems that you totally debunked the idea of free ads?

Well, for me or anyone who hasn’t enough money or budget for ads, the only alternative is to vigorously search for free ads and use them. You never can tell where people can find their gold nuggets in life. One African proverb says, that “where a runner reached that a walker will also reach, that it is a matter of time difference. Therefore, that should be left open for individuals.

But as for the consumer awareness, that’s worth taking note of because all that glitters are not gold right?

As an affiliate marketer, your target is to make money ok. And in other to make money your effort should be directed in attracting the interested customers, ready to buy customers who will convert for you. I think that is the bottom line. In this case, you have to learn how to strategize on how to be appealing, ready and welcoming to these profitable consumers. I called them profitable because, they are the kind of customers that will determine your success, your commissions by their purchases when they visit your site based on what they see and like and buy.

Actually, as you rightly alluded to your content, affiliate marketing is a process of making money online, and as a process, it ought to be learned. The good news is that in the Wealthy Affiliate platform, they have all the best tools to do just that. This is a platform of experts in this line of business for over 15 years. They have a trusted platform to train people from scratch to the top on how to become a successful affiliate marketer. That’s their brand, and they have been producing a great number of thousandnians and millionaires as successful affiliate marketers. Much to say, but I will leave it here for now.

    Wishing you all the best!

  13. Hello Jack, if there is anything I want right now is a way to create multiple income streams. This is because there is a likelihood that things will get worse before they get better as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I appreciate the success formula you have shared that shows how practical it is to make money with affiliate marketing. The images made it easier for me to understand and appreciate the content.
My main worry lies around getting traffic, hot or cold, but I guess this is a trade that requires patience, hard work and dedication. I have also known that a personal coach is needed to help me get decisions right.

Thank you for your exhaustive blog that surely will help many to get going with affiliate marketing.

  14. Thank you Jack for this article, it’s very well laid out. It is always good to do everything in systematic manner with in depth knowledge of the thing which you are doing. And you have very explained traffic and have explained consumer awareness in systematic manner. Its worth going through your post as it is giving lots of valuable knowledge to new affiliate marketers like me

    Rajiv

  15. You have written one of the most thorough articles about affiliate marketing I have seen lately. You are spot on about paid and free traffic and I would say that most people that are just starting should only focus on getting organic traffic. Yes it can take even a couple of years before any meaningful results show but it is safer, more stable in the long run and you can have a steady stream of traffic when your site becomes old. Paid traffic should only be for those that know what they are doing. But I can see how lucrative fast success can be that’s why many people go for paid traffic. And ultimately they fail…

  16. For me, i think this are really great i would definitely love to try them out as there are very few posts like this on the internet today…thanks for sharing this awesome article i know it would help a lot  of people has it has help me…i hope to see good articles from our site.

  17. Hi Jack,

This is one of the most in-depth articles I’ve read about affiliate marketing. I certainly learned quite a few things about the process that I’ve never though about before. I found the stages of consumer awareness to be particularly interesting because it relates to an important part of marketing: people will buy what they want, not what they need.

You could talk all day about how much somebody needs a certain product and convince them that they would, in fact, be better off with said product, but if they don’t want it, it’s all for nothing.

That also makes me think of a favorite Calvin and Hobbes comic strip in which Calvin is selling “a swift kick in the butt” and is confused about why his business scheme is failing. “I can’t understand it,” he says. “Everybody I know needs what I’m selling!”

Anyways, I wish you the best of luck with your website. Thanks for this very informative article.

    -Isaac

  18. This looks very interesting. This is a good post because you have explained so well the formula that can be used in affiliate marketing to  get to a very good place and make so.muvh money. I like how you have also explained your stages of awareness too. It is a fantastic technique that I would also be willing to give a shot.

  19. Wow, it’s the first time that I am hearing of the states of awareness but it is something that I don’t mind giving a try at all. Looks very good . I have just started. Affiliate marketing though and I believe that with time I will be able to make so much money doing it and adding this formula to the training I’m taking, it will be a lot of help. Thanks.

  20. I haven’t started using Ads on my website and all along I thought approvals are based on the amount of traffic to one’s website. I was completely wrong.
